My approach to project management is simple – clearly define what a project's purpose is, state in plain terms the work to be done and who needs to do it, keep all stakeholders in the loop with a core set of documentation and reports, and DELIVER. Delivery involves far more than creating an end product or service, it also involves seeing where the cracks are in a process, being truthful about what is happening right now, and taking the appropriate steps to solve problems should they arise.
I use a hybrid of PMI and Agile practices – my goal is to meet requirements and stay on track, using just the right amount of documentation, a few key reports, and holding only meetings that end in a decision being made or options being presented in a salient way. Project Management should not be shrouded in mystery, but rather like having good manners, it should make the life of your project run more smoothly.
